जनमेजय उवाच ते तथा पुरुषव्याघ्रा निहत्य बकराक्षसम् अत ऊर्ध्वं ततो ब्रह्मन्किमकुर्वत पाण्डवाः
Janamejaya asked: O Brāhmaṇa! After killing the demon named Baka, what did the Pāṇḍava-s, those tigers among men, do?
जनमेजय ने पूछा: हे ब्राह्मण! बक नामक राक्षस को मारने के बाद, पांडवों, जो मनुष्यों में से एक थे, ने क्या किया?
Vaiśampāyana said: O king! After killing the demon named Baka, they lived in the house of that Brāhmaṇa, engaging themselves in studies about the supreme brāhman.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! बक नामक राक्षस को मारने के बाद, वे उस ब्राह्मण के घर में रहने लगे और परम ब्राह्मण के बारे में अध्ययन करने में लग गए।
A few days later, a Brāhmaṇa who was rigid in the practice of his vows came to live in that Brāhmaṇa's house.
कुछ दिनों बाद, एक ब्राह्मण जो अपने व्रतों का पालन करने में कठोर था, उस ब्राह्मण के घर में रहने आया।

स सम्यक्पूजयित्वा तं विद्वान्विप्रर्षभस्तदा ददौ प्रतिश्रयं तस्मै सदा सर्वातिथिव्रती
That learned bull among Brāhmana-s, always hospitable towards guests, duly worshipped him and gave him a place to live in his house.
ब्राह्मणों के बीच उस विद्वान बैल ने, जो हमेशा मेहमानों का सत्कार करता था, उसकी विधिवत पूजा की और उसे अपने घर में रहने के लिए जगह दी।
Then those bulls among men, the Pāṇḍava-s, and Kuntī, requested the Brāhmaṇa to tell them about his wonderful experiences.
तब उन नर बैलों, पांडवों और कुंती ने ब्राह्मण से अपने अद्भुत अनुभवों के बारे में बताने का अनुरोध किया।

कथयामास देशान्स तीर्थानि विविधानि च राज्ञां च विविधाश्चर्याः पुराणि विविधानि च
He told them about many countries, places of pilgrimage, rivers, many kings and many wonderful cities.
उसने उन्हें कई देशों, तीर्थ स्थानों, नदियों, कई राजाओं और कई अद्भुत शहरों के बारे में बताया।

स तत्राकथयद्विप्रः कथान्ते जनमेजय पाञ्चालेष्वद्भुताकारं याज्ञसेन्याः स्वयंवरम्
O Janamejaya! When these accounts were over, the Brāhmaṇa told them about the wonderful svayaṃvara of Yajñasena's daughter in the land of Pāñcāla
हे जनमेजय! जब ये वृत्तांत समाप्त हो गए, तो ब्राह्मण ने उन्हें पंचाल देश में यज्ञसेना की बेटी के अद्भुत स्वयंवर के बारे में बताया।
and the births of Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍī and also that of Kṛṣṇā, who was born from Drupada's great sacrifice and not from any woman's womb.
और धृष्टद्युम्न और शिखंडी का जन्म और कृष्ण का भी, जो द्रुपद के महान यज्ञ से पैदा हुए थे, न कि किसी महिला के गर्भ से।
Hearing of these wonderful events that had happened in this world, those bulls among men asked the great-souled one to narrate these accounts in greater detail.
इस संसार में घटी इन अद्भुत घटनाओं को सुनकर उन मनुष्यों ने उस महात्मा से इन वृत्तांतों को और अधिक विस्तार से बताने के लिए कहा।
"How did Drupada's son, Dhṛṣṭadyumna's birth take place from the fire? How did Kṛṣṇā's wonderful birth take place from the middle of the altar?
"द्रुपद के पुत्र धृष्टद्युम्न का जन्म अग्नि से कैसे हुआ? कृष्ण का अद्भुत जन्म वेदी के मध्य से कैसे हुआ?

कथं द्रोणान्महेष्वासात्सर्वाण्यस्त्राण्यशिक्षत कथं प्रियसखायौ तौ भिन्नौ कस्य कृतेन च
How did he learn the usage of all weapons from the great archer Droṇa? How did the great friendship between those two break up?"
उन्होंने महान धनुर्धर द्रोण से सभी हथियारों का उपयोग कैसे सीखा? उन दोनों की इतनी गहरी दोस्ती कैसे टूट गयी?”
O king! Having been thus asked by those bulls among men, the Brāhmaṇa recounted in detail the story of Draupadī's birth.
हे राजा! उन नर बैलों द्वारा इस प्रकार पूछे जाने पर ब्राह्मण ने द्रौपदी के जन्म की कहानी विस्तार से सुनाई।
